What Invisalign actually is

Not all aligners are Invisalign

Invisalign is a specific product made by Align Technology, an American company that has spent over 25 years engineering the material, the software and the clinical protocol. The clear aligners you see advertised under many other names — including several direct-to-consumer brands — are not Invisalign.

The difference is the material. Invisalign aligners are made from SmartTrack, a multi-layer proprietary plastic that applies a more predictable, gentler force compared to standard thermoformed aligners. Better force control means more predictable tooth movement — which matters more the harder the movement is.

The other difference is the planning. Every Invisalign case is planned in ClinCheck, a 3D treatment planning software that maps every tooth movement across every stage. Ordinary aligner companies use simpler planning tools — and the quality of the plan is what determines whether your teeth end up where they should.

How Invisalign works

See it for yourself

This is the official Invisalign product explanation — what SmartTrack does and why the fit matters.

Why specialist planning matters

Dr Hitesh is an MDS Orthodontist, not a general dentist

What MDS Orthodontics means

An MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics is a 3-year postgraduate specialist degree. It trains the doctor specifically in how teeth move, how the jaw grows, and how to plan tooth movement sequences that produce stable, predictable results.

Most dentists who offer aligners hold a BDS — a 5-year undergraduate degree with no specialist orthodontic training. They are qualified to perform basic treatments, but complex tooth movement planning is outside the scope of their specialist training.

What this means for your case

Aligner treatment looks simple from the outside — you wear trays and teeth move. What the patient does not see is the planning: which teeth move in which sequence, how rotations are staged, what attachments go where, and how the final bite will settle.

A well-planned case produces the result shown in the ClinCheck preview. A poorly planned case produces teeth that finish in the wrong position, requiring refinements, retreatment or a switch to braces mid-way. The planning is the treatment.

3Shape TRIOS 3 — no putty impressions

Every Invisalign case at The Dental House begins with a 3Shape TRIOS 3 intraoral scan. This captures a precise 3D model of your teeth in under 10 minutes — no trays, no gagging, no waiting for impression material to set.

The digital scan integrates directly with the Invisalign ClinCheck system, removing the distortion that physical impressions introduce. More accurate impressions mean better-fitting aligners from tray one.

ClinCheck — approve before committing

Before a single aligner is manufactured, Dr Hitesh plans every stage of your treatment in ClinCheck. You see a digital simulation of how your teeth will move, tray by tray, and what the projected end result looks like.

You approve this simulation before agreeing to treatment. If the projected outcome is not what you expected, the plan is adjusted — not your teeth. This is the most important patient protection in aligner treatment.

Who Invisalign works for

Most adult cases. Some more than others.

Invisalign works well for the majority of adult alignment problems: crowding, spacing, mild to moderate overbite, underbite and crossbite. The current generation — with SmartForce attachments — handles complex rotations and vertical movements that earlier aligner systems could not.

Cases that suit Invisalign well

  • Crowding — teeth overlapping or rotated
  • Spacing — gaps between teeth
  • Mild to moderate overbite or underbite
  • Crossbite — one or several teeth biting in the wrong position
  • Relapse after previous braces treatment
  • Cosmetic alignment before veneers or smile makeover

When we say braces are the better option

Severe skeletal discrepancies — where the jaw itself needs repositioning, not just the teeth — are beyond what any aligner system can address without surgical support. Certain complex extractions, significant vertical corrections, and cases needing very precise torque control can be more predictably managed with fixed braces. Dr Hitesh will tell you clearly which tool is right for your case, and why.

The journey

From scan to straight teeth

01

Digital scan

The 3Shape TRIOS 3 captures a precise 3D model of your teeth in under 10 minutes. No putty, no gagging. The data feeds directly into the Invisalign system.

02

ClinCheck planning

Dr Hitesh plans every stage of your treatment in ClinCheck — which teeth move, in which sequence, with which attachments. You see and approve the projected result before anything is manufactured.

03

Aligners delivered

Your custom SmartTrack aligners arrive from the Align Technology facility. Most sets cover the full course of treatment, with refinement trays if needed.

04

Wear and change

Each tray is worn for 7 to 14 days, 20 to 22 hours a day. Regular check-ins with Dr Hitesh — typically every 6 to 8 weeks — keep the case on track.

05

Refinements if needed

If tooth movement deviates from the ClinCheck plan, refinement trays correct the course. This is a normal part of complex cases, not a sign something went wrong.

06

Retention

After your final tray, Vivera retainers maintain the result. Teeth will drift without retention — this is biology, not a defect of the treatment.

Invisalign vs braces

An honest comparison

Both work. The right choice depends on your case, your lifestyle, and sometimes your budget.

Invisalign Braces
Visibility Nearly invisible Visible (metal) or discreet (ceramic/lingual)
Removable Yes — remove to eat and brush No — fixed throughout treatment
Cleaning Full access to teeth for brushing Requires special technique around brackets
Comfort Smooth plastic, no wires Bracket/wire adjustments can cause soreness
Complex cases Mild to moderate; some complex Full range including severe cases
Compliance needed High — 22 hrs/day discipline required No compliance needed — always working
Typical duration 9–18 months for most adult cases Varies widely by case complexity
Best for Adults wanting discretion Complex cases or patients needing fixed force

Dr Hitesh will recommend whichever option produces the better clinical result for your specific case — not whichever costs more or sells more easily.

Questions

Everything about Invisalign in Chembur

What makes Invisalign different from ordinary clear aligners?
Invisalign aligners are made from SmartTrack material — a proprietary multi-layer plastic developed by Align Technology over two decades of clinical research. SmartTrack applies a gentler, more consistent force compared to standard thermoformed aligners, which means more predictable tooth movement and better fit throughout treatment. Ordinary aligners are typically made from a single-layer of generic PETG plastic with no force-control engineering.
Is Dr Hitesh an official Invisalign provider?
Yes. Dr Hitesh Nagrath is a verified Invisalign Provider listed on the official Invisalign India website at invisalign.in. You can search his name and The Dental House, Chembur on their Find a Doctor tool. He holds an MDS in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics — which means he plans every case as a qualified orthodontic specialist, not a general dentist.
How many trays will I need?
This depends entirely on your case — the degree of crowding or spacing, whether teeth need to rotate or change vertical position, and whether any extractions are required. Mild cases can finish in 10 to 18 trays. Moderate cases typically run 20 to 35 trays. Complex cases can be longer. Dr Hitesh gives you a written ClinCheck treatment plan before you commit, so you see the projected number of trays and the expected result digitally before agreeing to anything.
Does Invisalign hurt?
There is typically mild pressure for the first day or two after each new tray, which most patients describe as tightness rather than pain. Because the force is distributed evenly and controlled, it is generally more comfortable than braces. The aligners have no wires or brackets to catch on soft tissue.
Can I eat and drink normally during Invisalign treatment?
Yes — you remove the aligners to eat and drink anything other than plain water. This is one of the most practical advantages over braces. The trays should be worn 20 to 22 hours a day for treatment to stay on schedule.
How long does Invisalign take?
Most straightforward adult cases at The Dental House complete in 9 to 18 months. Cases requiring significant movement or complex corrections take longer. The ClinCheck simulation gives a projected timeline specific to your case before treatment starts.
What is ClinCheck?
ClinCheck is Invisalign's proprietary 3D digital treatment planning software. Before your aligners are manufactured, Dr Hitesh uses ClinCheck to plan every tooth movement across every stage of your treatment. You see a simulation of the projected before-and-after result on screen and approve it before a single tray is made. This is not a rough sketch — it is the exact movement plan the factory will use to manufacture your aligners.
Does Invisalign work for complex cases?
Invisalign has expanded significantly beyond simple cases. The current generation of SmartForce attachments — small tooth-coloured bumps bonded to specific teeth — allows the system to handle rotations, torque corrections and vertical movements that were once considered outside aligner capability. Dr Hitesh will assess your case and tell you honestly whether Invisalign is the right tool, or whether braces would produce a better result for your specific crowding or bite issue.
What happens after Invisalign — do I need a retainer?
Yes, always. After any orthodontic treatment — aligners or braces — teeth will drift back without retention. Invisalign offers Vivera retainers, which are made from the same SmartTrack material as the aligners and are more durable than standard vacuum-formed retainers. Dr Hitesh discusses the retention plan before treatment ends, not after.
Can I do Invisalign if I had braces before?
Yes, in most cases. Adult patients who had braces in their teens and experienced relapse are among the most common Invisalign candidates. Dr Hitesh assesses whether the relapse is within treatable range for aligners or whether a different approach is needed.
